Method 1: Volume and frequency

It is important to pay attention to the amount of urine your dog urinates at one time and the number of times per day so that you can tell if the health is abnormal.

1. Low volume and high frequency of urination

The dog urinates very little at a time, but a lot. This indicates that the dog has a thick bladder wall that is difficult to expand, so it cannot store much urine. Even if the total amount of urine produced by the dog remains constant, if the bladder cannot expand, the urine that enters the bladder will be expelled quickly. If this is the case, the dog may develop acute cystitis.

2. Urine volume is repeatedly high

The bladder is able to expand normally, but the dog is urinating more and more often at a time. That means the total amount of urine in the dog has become more. The increase in urine volume must be due to some reason, such as excessive water intake or possibly a kidney problem. If this is the case, the dog may be suffering from diabetes, uremia, etc.

3. Low urine output, low frequency

In this case, if the urine output is low and urination is difficult, the dog may suffer from dehydration, acute renal insufficiency, neurological or muscular problems, and so on.

4. Low urine volume many times

This may be an individual variation from breed to breed. If it occurs occasionally or is not beyond normal standards, we should not worry too much.
